Promoting Riverside Families' Health

Follow the Leader: Guiding Families to Healthy Living

In successful collaboration with Riverside area Head Start/Pre-School programs, Follow the Leader is one of RCHF’s newest programs focusing on building parents' skills—empowering them to be leaders in their families' health. The program was launched to prevent diabetes within families, starting with our youngest children. The six-week program is conducted at various sites with parents from Riverside Unified School District and Riverside County Office of Education Head Start/Pre-School programs.

A high level of enthusiasm characterizes the participants who are deeply motivated to make the necessary changes towards a healthier life. After just the first week of class, participants have modified their home meal preparation habits to include more fruits and vegetables. They are also inclined to reduce portion sizes and become more willing to add exercise to their daily routine. As one participant shared with us, "As of today my life has changed—nutrition and exercise have brought happiness to my life."

The successful collaboration of this program was presented in November 2009 at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Philadelphia. This program demonstrates the opportunities to create healthy behavior change in our communities through partnerships between schools and community agencies.
