Miles of Smiles Elementary Dental Program

The dental program Miles of Smiles consists of education in oral hygiene and nutrition, with screenings subsequently performed by Dr. Philip Bradford and Dr. Yvette Felipe.  Elementary Schools from the Riverside Unified School District (Liberty, Longfellow, Bryant, Fremont, Grant, Hawthorne, Highgrove, Highland,  Hyatt), the Jurupa School District (Pedley, Troth, West Riverside, Glen Avon,  Granite Hill, Ina Arbuckle), and the Alvord School District (Arlanza, Foothill, Rosemary Kennedy, Terrace, Twinhill) benefited from the program with 15,522 children educated and 9,006 screened.  Additionally, 2,043 children received sealants, with a total of 6,470 sealants placed.  Miles of Smiles also held 39 dental health fairs in 21 schools, grades K-6.

Pediatric Dental Program

Pediatric dentistry is a crucial component of the dental services by the Riverside Community Health Foundation through Community Health Systems, Inc. Dr. Valeria Pereira, specialist in pediatric dentistry has offered screenings, evaluation and treatment to a large number of children in desperate need of dental and oral care. During 2007, 398 children received treatment from the pediatric dentist and 75 children received dental treatment under general anesthesia. The impact of this program is priceless. Dr. Damon Castillo, former Riverside County Superintendent of Schools and 2007 Vice-Chair to RCHF’s Board of Directors, emphasizes the formidable impact of dental care in the life of young children: "It is impossible for children to pay attention in the classroom when they are suffering from severe tooth ache. Providing dental treatment to school children greatly enhances their ability to learn and has long-term effects on their future."
