Project S.H.A.R.P:

With baby boomers now claiming social security at the rate of 10,000 per day in the US, the aging population represents a growing health concern, with its own set of requirements and implications.  The Riverside Community Health Foundation has long been committed to enhancing the well-being of seniors and has been highly proactive about this particular age group.

RCHF is not only currently actively involved in Senior Collaborations throughout the City of Riverside, participating in most senior-focused community events, but it also runs the Senior Health Advocacy, Revitalization, and Promotion (S.H.A.R.P) Program, serving 4,919 seniors in the areas of health education, exercise classes and screening assessments in 2007.  Now operational on 12 sites, including senior facilities and senior centers, Project SHARP educates seniors of Riverside through an intimate and comprehensive approach to prevention, education, and fitness opportunities.  Health education classes such as Fall Prevention, Senior Fraud, and Breast & Cervical Health are just a few of the topics presented in order to enhance quality of life for seniors.  According to one participant, “The classes offered by S.H.A.R. P. are very informative.  They helped me to improve my goals in keeping myself healthy.  Thank-you for enabling us to educate ourselves, improve our health and help others.”

Also, ALIVE! with Damue, RCHF’s senior-focused exercise program personalizes exercises to the interests of this specific age group.  It includes self-defense, low impact aerobics and chair exercises focusing on balance and coordination.  A radical transforming in mind-set regarding the benefits of staying physically fit is not uncommon as seniors learn to sustain an active life-style.  When her doctor recommended exercise to lower her cholesterol levels, one participant at the Dale Senior Center stated that she didn’t think she could comply with the exercise prescription.  She now has made a 180 degree turn-around, and is enthusiastic about maintaining her physical fitness. Such stories of real learning are highly gratifying to the RCHF’s health education staff as they continue to inspire, teach and support the elderly within the Riverside community.
